Somewhere in the process of choosing a jeweller, someone will tell you their rings are made by hand rather than cast, and will say it in a tone that settles the matter.
The handmade vs cast ring argument is one of the last places in fine jewellery where a manufacturing method gets sold as a moral position. It is not one. Both routes are used by careful jewellers and careless ones, both involve a great deal of hand work, and the two finished rings are often impossible to tell apart on a hand.
There is a real difference underneath the sales pitch, and it is metallurgical rather than ethical. Here is what each method does to the metal, and the few cases where it is worth choosing one over the other.
Casting and Fabrication Start From Different Raw Material
The two methods diverge before a jeweller has touched anything.
Casting works from a pattern. A model of the ring — carved in wax, or grown on a printer from a design you have approved — is encased in investment plaster, the pattern is burnt out, and molten metal fills the cavity it leaves behind. What comes out is the whole ring in one piece, rough and still attached to its sprue.
Fabrication works from mill products. Sheet, wire and tube, already rolled and drawn down from a bar, are cut, bent, forged and filed into parts, and those parts are soldered together. A shank might be forged from half-round wire; a setting head built from cut sheet with wire claws let into it. Nothing is melted into a shape. Everything is worked into one.
Both routes then arrive at the same place. Files, emery, stone setting, polishing — all of it by hand, on both. The hand work is not the variable here. It is common to both methods, and it is where most of the hours in any ring are spent.
The Handmade vs Cast Ring Question Is Really a Question About Grain
Metal that has been melted and allowed to solidify inside a mould has a particular internal structure. The trade metallurgical literature describes as-cast precious metal as having a relatively large grain size and a pronounced dendritic structure — crystals grown branching outward as the metal froze. Large grains have consequences a jeweller sees on the bench: an orange peel texture appearing under polishing, more polishing work to remove it, and lower ductility in the finished piece. Grain refiners are added to casting alloys to control this, cobalt among them, typically at something like 0.15 to 0.5 per cent.
Then there is porosity, in two unrelated families. Gas porosity is smooth, roughly spherical cavities left by gas trapped in the metal as it solidified. Shrinkage porosity comes from the metal contracting as it cools, and it has the nastier habit: some breaks the surface where you can see it, some stays internal and blind. Grain refinement helps by breaking up the clusters — but as the same literature is careful to say, the total amount of porosity is not reduced, only redistributed. Many of these defects stay invisible until the piece has been finished and polished, which is when they surface.
Worked metal behaves differently because it has been deformed rather than poured. Rolling, drawing and forging distort the grains and harden the metal as they go; annealing then recrystallises it, and the more cold work done beforehand, the finer the grain that comes back. This is why die-struck components have long been treated in the trade as a premium route — the argument made for them is the absence of casting porosity and the surface finish transferred straight off the tooling.
All of which is true, and smaller in practice than it sounds. A well-cast ring in a good alloy from a competent caster does not fail because of its grain size. The difference shows up where metal is thin, worked hard, or asked to spring — a fine band, a claw tip, a hinge. On a substantial ring with a stone in it, you would not be able to pick which method built it.
Every Fabricated Ring Is Held Together by a Different Alloy
Fabrication has a trade-off that almost never appears in the pitch for it.
Soldered joints are made with a solder that must melt below the metal it is joining, or the ring collapses while you are assembling it. The convention is that the solder's liquidus sits at least 20°C below the solidus of the parent alloy. For 18ct yellow gold, that means solders running roughly 726 to 804°C against a parent alloy melting at about 855 to 875°C. Solders come in grades — hard, medium, easy — so each new joint can be made at a lower temperature than the last without remelting the ones already done. Hallmarking convention requires the solder to be the same caratage as the piece, and colour is matched by shifting the copper up for a warmer tone or the silver up for a paler one, which moves the melting range again.
So a fabricated ring is a set of parts held together by seams of deliberately different metal. Done well, you will never see them. It also means the order of assembly is a permanent constraint on the object, and any later work has to account for the joins already in it. A cast ring has none of that — one continuous piece of a single alloy — which is the honest point in casting's favour and the one you will rarely hear made. What to Ask When a Jeweller Says Handmade
The word is not regulated in any useful way, so the follow-up questions do the work.
- How was this piece formed — cast, fabricated, or both? A good answer is specific and completely untroubled by the question. Most fine jewellery combines the two methods, and there is nothing wrong with saying so.
- Which parts are mill products? Even a fully fabricated ring begins with sheet and wire that somebody else rolled and drew. Handmade describes the assembly, not the origin of the metal.
- Is the shank forged or cast? On a plain, unset band this is the one place the method genuinely changes how the ring wears.
- If it is cast, who casts it, and from what pattern? Printed from an approved model or carved in wax are both good answers. Vagueness about it is not.
- Where are the joins, and what do they mean for any future work on the ring? A jeweller who builds by hand should be able to point at them and describe them as a design constraint rather than change the subject.
Where We Sit, and What That Is Worth to You

Handmade, in this industry, functions more often as a status word than a specification. Nothing stops a studio from using it because a person finished the ring, and a person finishes essentially every ring. Method is a poor proxy for quality in both directions: a fabricated ring with heavy seams and soft joins is worse than a clean casting, and a porous casting is worse than either. What you are buying is the judgement of whoever chose the method for your design, and the standard they hold the result to.
If a studio asks a premium for the word alone, ask what the premium buys. An answer describing a forged section, a hand-cut setting, or a specific reason this design needs building rather than growing is worth paying for. "Because it is handmade" is not an answer.
Here is the part that costs us something. For most rings — anything with a centre stone and some detail around it — the construction method is not what decides whether you still like the ring in ten years. Design, proportion and the quality of the setting decide that. If you are weighing up two studios and the deciding factor has become cast versus fabricated, you have probably narrowed to two adequate answers to a question that was never the important one. The more useful ground is what you can read in a design before it is made, which is why we would rather talk about what to check before you approve one — nothing here goes into production until a client has seen the design and signed it off.
Where It Actually Matters
Three cases justify caring about the method. A plain, unset band worn every day, where forged metal has a real advantage. Anything with very fine or thin sections, where casting porosity has less material to hide in. And anything expected to spring or hinge, where worked metal behaves better than poured metal.
Everywhere else, ask the question, listen to how it gets answered, and then go back to looking at the ring. The answer tells you something about the jeweller. It tells you much less about the ring than the person answering it would like you to believe.
