A classic expression of the Australian fields — the colour and size for which these deposits are best known.

On the cut

Most Australian rough is cut offshore for maximum weight retention rather than optimal light return, and a great deal of fine material never reaches its potential as a result. A precision cut sacrifices yield to hold the correct angles for the stone — the same rough returns a smaller finished gem, cut to perform rather than to weigh. It is a minority of the market. Cut quality is not part of the rarity score, which measures natural scarcity alone.

How the scale works

Carat weight carries the most weight, and colour then raises or lowers the result within that size. Australia’s scarcest colours — orange above all — compound with size, so a large stone in a rare colour ranks higher than either quality would suggest alone. The depth and brightness of colour is also taken into account, as is the quality of colour zoning in parti sapphires.
